My quilting background

I learned to make Hawaiian Quilts from Margaret Luika Kamaka in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii, between 1978 and 1981. Calling on my degree in Education, I began teaching Hawaiian quiltmaking in 1982, when I moved to the Seattle, Washington area with my husband and daughter. In 1988, I made my first pieced quilt, and I have been making both traditional and art quilts since. Hawaiian quilting and appliqué quilts continue to be my specialty. My pieced and appliquéd quilts have appeared in magazines, quilt books, and have traveled throughout the United States and to other countries.

In 1991 my sister, Janice Lee Baehr, and I formed Pacific Rim Quilt Company to sell our Hawaiian quilt patterns and promote Hawaiian Quilting.  Together we have produced three distinct lines of appliqué quilt patterns:

We have also produced two instructional videos and a book/DVD set:

In late 2007, my husband and I moved to the Oregon coast to be closer to the fishing that he loves and the ocean that I love. In 2015 we moved back to Western Washington to be closer to family and a larger airport.

While my sister, Janice, and I sold Pacific Rim Quilt Company in 2015, I continue to work closely with the new owners. I am still traveling to teach wherever I am invited and continue to design new quilt patterns.

My specialty

My specialty is stress-free needleturn appliqué. I put students directly in touch with their needle, thread, and fabric. I show how incredibly easy appliqué is without the use of freezer paper, toothpicks, starch, cardboard, ironing, or interfacing -- all things that needlessly complicate what is otherwise a very simple process.

I have been teaching needleturn appliqué and Hawaiian quiltmaking since 1982. I receive rave reviews wherever I teach, including on the internet as an instructor at Academy of Quilting. After taking a class from me, beginners and experts agree that appliqué is not only possible, but positively addicting!

I have taught needleturn appliqué, hand quilting and even some machine piecing to thousands of quilters across the United States and Canada. If you are looking for a speaker or teacher for your shop, quilt guild or quilting event please contact me today to get on my schedule.
